Ethos and Values

Tanfield Lea Community Primary School aims to provide a safe, caring environment, which enables everyone in the school to fulfil their potential.

We aim:

  • To provide the highest possible standard of education through a broad, balanced and enjoyable curriculum appropriate to each individual.
  • To give the opportunity to develop the skills required to live and work together and to co-operate with each other.
  • To promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle, both physically and mentally, enabling individuals to make informed choices.
  • To develop an empathy with people around us; with the world in which we live and an understanding and respect of individuals, groups and nations. To encourage a sense of right and wrong and be self disciplined.
  • To provide a stimulating surrounding which is valued.
  • To foster a caring attitude towards others and our environment.

Through each of these we aim to be good citizens whose achievements are recognised and celebrated.

We have chosen 5 values which prepare the children both for life in school and our adult lives.

Turn Up: This is the importance of attending school, and on time, to maximise learning.  Turning up can also mean participating in the wider life of the school.

Learn:  As a school, we have a strong team of experienced, committed staff who want all children to achieve the very best they can.  Teachers focus on ways to make new knowledge and skills stick so that children are ready for their next steps.

Care:  As citizens, we want children to care about themselves, others and the community.  There are many opportunities for the children to have a positive impact on the world.

Persevere: Learning new things is not always easy.  We want children to be resilient in the face of challenges and develop a positive mindset.  Children are encouraged to be healthy and challenged to do the best they can.

Shine: All children, whatever their backgrounds and interests, have talents.  As a school, we celebrate children’s achievements in various fields, including academic, and are proud of the great things they can achieve.

These values are those we want all children at TLCPS to have and they underpin life here through discussions, assemblies and certificates.
